Gloria's Garden: Standard 8.G.6 - Explore and explain proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse.
This formative assessment exemplar was created by a team of Utah educators to be used as a resource in the classroom. It was reviewed for appropriateness by a Bias and Sensitivity/Special Education team and by state mathematics leaders. While no assessment is perfect, it is intended to be used as a formative tool that enables teachers to obtain evidence of student learning, identify assets and gaps in that learning, and adjust instruction for the two dimensions that are important for mathematical learning experiences (i.e., Standards for Mathematical Practice, Major Work of the Grade).

Hiking Utah: Standard Standard 7.SP.3 Informally assess the degree of visual overlap of two numerical data distributions with similar variabilities, estimating the difference between the centers by expressing it as a multiple of a measure of variability. For example, the mean height of players on the basketball team is 10 cm greater than the mean height of players on the soccer team, approximately twice the variability (mean absolute deviation) on either team; on a dot plot, the separation between the two distributions of heights is noticeable.

Have you ever wondered what the different places around the United States looks like where so many different important events happened? It can be hard to travel to find the answers and see these places. Yet with this lesson, students will need to use free images you can find to show what these locations look like now.  They will be exploring the historical sites through pictures and words to hopefully truly connect to these places.  Thumbnail image is an original photo taken of the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston, Massachusetts.

How to Incorporate iMovie in the Classroom

Preparing students for the world of tomorrow that will be means we need to incorporate more technology in classroom that doesn't simply replace something older, but instead is something you couldn't accomplish without the technology. Before you ask kids to use a brand new technology (to at least some) in a formal assessment, you first need to teach them how to use it and practice it in a low-risk setting so they're willing to try and take risks. iMovie can be used in the classroom to accomplish many tasks - kids can create a virtual gallery of their learning throughout a unit, give a visual and oral report on a topic, become a tour guide to a country they're learning about, create a book trailer for an independent reading or literature circle assignment ... the list is long.

This rubric defines a set of open educational practices that help educators to advance a classroom and school culture of open education and to advocate for the potential benefits of open educational resources (OER) in the context of continuous improvement. The rubric is intended to guide educator practice in working with OER to ensure that every student has the opportunity to engage in learning effectively. The rubric supports educators in accessing, curating, evaluating, and adapting OER in response to students’ particular needs, interests, and contexts, to author and share original or remixed resources, and to disseminate approaches to the implementation of those resources for future OER users to benefit from.
