This is an assessment from the Stanford History Education Group's Civic Online Reasoning curriculum. This is to assess how well students can assess information/claims that they find on social media. This is an assessment that is housed on Google Forms. You will be prompted to make a copy of the assessment which you can be distributed to students.
This lesson plan gives students a chance to learn about a country of their choice by accessing two databases to pull information from: Culturegrams and World Book Online. They are given a list of topics that need to be included in their project (which also serves as their assessment). The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the idea of choosing an informational topic. Students will learn through discussion and practice how to condense, or "narrow down," a topic. By the end of the class, each student will choose a topic of their own, which will then become the focus of their project.
This resource is for teachers to aid students through the expeditionary and inquiry-based learning process of Genius Hour. Genius Hour is a passion project students can participate in using 20% of class time every week (about 1 hour). This Genius Hour project will focus on student’s in special education and their IEP transition goals related to their career interests. The Big6 is a six-stage model to help anyone solve problems or make decisions by using information. Students can use this model to guide them through the research process. This resource helps students evaluate print resources using the Big6 and the CAARS models.
This is Day 2 of a 5 day unit teaching students strong research skills for a "white paper" style research paper (can be modified for any pro-con research assignment). For the purpose of this assignment, the white paper is an argumentative piece which introduces a problem and argues a solution to that problem.In this team taught lesson, students will learn that researching is not a linear process. They will use "presearch" to help them test, adjust, or even abandon viable topics from their brainstorming. They will learn to narrow ideas to smaller, researchable concepts.
This is a 5 day unit about validating sources on the internet and social media. It is taught so that students understand and respect the obligations of using social media wisely before sharing and the importance of giving credit to creators through citing sources. It is a blended unit with a final project to be done in Apple's Keynote where students will show what they have learned in a slide show to other students in the class. They will be able to practice what they learn in class and become better at research, validating sources, and spotting fake news. Students will perform Google Searches, trying to answer Trivial Pursuit Questions. They will perform timed searches before learning search skills, and compare their search time after learning search skills. The skills they learn are Boolean: AND, OR, NOT and Quotation Marks.
*This lesson plan is adaptable for various projects involving technology. This is a general lesson plan used for our Tech Fun Fridays. Students who are caught up in all core classes and not missing any assignemnts are given time to do their own research on a topic that they are interested in. They must conduct research, create a presentation to compile their research, cite sources, create a project (3D printing, animation, etc.), carry about that project including taking and editing photos of their final project to include at the end of their presentation and then practice their public speaking by presenting to the class. (This covers many core standards depending on what grade you teach. Please reference the standards you are working with to determine which ones fit this lesson.)
