This report offers guidance for K-12 districts and schools by synthesizing the latest research and knowledge on emerging practices for: 1) developing local habits of success frameworks, 2) addressing equity and cultural considerations in implementing habits of success and lifelong learning skills, and 3) promoting and assessing habits of success. The report also provides recommendations and next steps to support all students in building strong habits of success.

Teachers at this Pennsylvania school have adapted the Modern Classrooms model to work with elementary grades, by designing color-coded pictorial unit “road maps,” creating teacher-made videos with prompts for students to pause and practice new skills, and offering must-do, should-do, and aspire-to-do lessons within each unit.

Problem solving typically involves developing an accurate understanding of a problem, presenting and discussing solution strategies, implementing the best strategy, reviewing the results and revising the strategy as needed. This critical thinking process requires additional skills including: a positive belief in one’s ability to solve problems, a willingness to engage in productive struggle demonstrating perseverance and creative problem solving, and the ability to examine one’s actions along the way.
