In this co-taught 80-minute face-to-face lesson (assessment is homework or given time in a second class session) students will rotate through stations to make personal connections with the book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. (Stations can be removed or customized to allow for time, budget, or supervision constraints.) Please note, this lesson works best when you have several adult volunteers to run stations. This lesson is best co-taught with an ELA teacher who will be reading and discussing the book with their students. (It can be slightly adapted to fit similar stories.) It is also an effective way to deepen understanding and connections after the class has read the book. In this social studies skill builder, students will learn about the life and death of Anne Frank. Students will be able to recognize what it means to empathize with the experience of others after reading about Anne Frank's life. This skill builder is most appropriate for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. It is estimated this lesson will take about 15-25 minutes to complete. Through virtual field trips, class collaboration, and independent practice, students use reading comprehension and observation skills to learn about Anne Frank and her family's life before and during World War II. They will also learn about the trials and hardships the Jewish people faced and the importance of empathizing with others.

This lesson plan is a simple project to have students show that they can use a template, add pictures of their choice and add a few paragraphs of body text to a document. This is something that can be done in any program, but this specific lesson is designed for Pages (Apple's version of word processing). The idea is to make a summary of school events that have happened in the first two-three weeks of school. This lesson could be modified for any three week stretch of school that aligns to your scope and sequence. The important part of this project is that students learn how to add pictures, use a template and add some text for their desired school activities.

My project is making One Pagers to show their understanding of the text they have read, in this case, a novel that they read independently. One Pagers can be used to respond to a variety of texts, but for this lesson plan, I have the One Pager for students responding to a novel that they have read independently. I have included the requirements for both 7th and 8th grade as some of the requirements are different. I have also included some websites on how others use One Pagers. Anchor Standard 2: Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize key supporting details and ideas.Anchor Standard 3: Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas interact over the course of a text. The photo that I am using for my thumbnail was taken by me, Melanie Shurtz.

The focus of this project will be a personal narrative of an event or situation that caused a major change in the students' lives for the better. Instead of a traditional written story, students are required to complete a digital story using school tools available to them through the school license or on their personal devices. The face-to-face lesson instruction will take 45 minutes. The remainder of the 90-minute block will be given to students to work on their projects. An additional class period should be added to finish, revise, edit, and share their projects within small groups. This plan is for high school grade levels.
