This brief is designed to support practitioners, instructional coaches, and school leaders in designing and implementing procedures for choosing literacy assessments, analyzing data, setting criteria, and making decisions based on student data when implementing multitiered systems of support that accommodates English learners (ELs). Classroom teachers and EL interventionists will find this brief helpful for selecting measures, making group and individual decisions, and monitoring student progress across languages. This brief uses scientific evidence from research to share a framework for assessment and data-based decision-making to improve literacy instruction for ELs. This brief also addresses issues that school and district personnel frequently encounter when designing and implementing tiered instruction in schools that implement bilingual programs or that serve ELs in English as a second language programs.

"Children entering kindergarten vary greatly in their language and literacy skills. Therefore, up-to-date information about evidence-based practices is essential for early childhood educators and policymakers as they support preschool children’s language and literacy development...More than 74,000 studies were analyzed to identify interventions that improved students’ performance in six language and literacy domains (language, phonological awareness, print knowledge, decoding, early writing, and general literacy). The findings revealed that instruction that teaches a specific domain is likely to increase performance in that domain. Interventions that teach language exclusively might be more beneficial when conducted in small groups or one-on-one than in larger group sizes. In addition, teaching both phonological awareness and print knowledge might benefit performance in print knowledge. Finally, some evidence indicates that instruction that teaches both phonological awareness and print knowledge might also lead to improvements in decoding and early writing performance" (IES, 2021).

This activity demonstrates the effect of changes in the environment on the growth of plants. The plants are placed in environments such as high salinity, cold, heat, or drought and observe the different reactions (growth) of the plants to these conditions. Students discuss the desirability of breeding new types of plants that are better able to withstand these changes if they occur in the general environment. The objectives of this activity is to: 1. Plant, grow and maintain plants under different environmental treatment conditions. 2. Observe differences in plant growth between these treatments. 3. Compare the growth of treated plants with the growth of control plants
