Open Middle provides math problems that have a closed beginning, a closed end, and an open middle. This means that there are multiple ways to approach and ultimately solve the problems. Open middle problems generally require a higher Depth of Knowledge than most problems that assess procedural and conceptual understanding.

English language learners (ELLs) may have some difficulty identifying the main idea when they are reading a paragraph. Teaching students how to paraphrase can help them learn to pick out what is important in the material that they read.

The purpose of this task is to use similar triangles in order to study the coordinates of points which divide a line segment in a given ratio.

This task helps students solidify their understanding of linear functions and push them to be more fluent in their reasoning about slope and y-intercepts. This task has also produced a reasonable starting place for discussing point-slope form of a linear equation.

This problem with multiple solutions provides an opportunity for students to practice subtraction while developing logical thinking and systematic record-keeping strategies. Given a pyramid of six circles, solvers are challenged to arrange the numbers 1 - 6 so that each number is the difference between the two numbers just below it. Children may use pencil and paper or the interactive Flash applet provided. This formative assessment exemplar was created by a team of Utah educators to be used as a resource in the classroom. The focus of the Find the Next Number from 11-99 intervention is saying and writing the next number up to 99. It has two phases that use base ten blocks. Phase 1 focuses on the next number within a ten. Phase 2 focuses on the next number over the transition over ten, like 59 to 60.

Children will learn to use writing materials.  Multiple opportunities to develop drawing and writing skills is important at this age.  As children are ready, encourage them to create simple strokes after a model.  Their abilities will increase as they are ready.   

This lesson is for preschool children to showcase their fine motor projects. Students will take photos using the classroom iPad and a college will be made to hang in the fine motor area to showcase student work and to be an inspiration board for other students.This project will be connected to our letter of the day. 

Children need to develop coordination of the muscles in their shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and fingers.  Provide materials in order to help children build and strengthen those muscles.
