This interactive Flash animation allows students to explore size estimation in one, two and three dimensions. Multiple levels of difficulty allow for progressive skill improvement. In the simplest level, users estimate the number of small line segments that can fit into a larger line segment. Intermediate and advanced levels offer feature games that explore area of rectangles and circles, and volume of spheres and cubes. Related lesson plans and student guides are available for middle school and high school classroom instruction. Editor's Note: When the linear dimensions of an object change by some factor, its area and volume change disproportionately: area in proportion to the square of the factor and volume in proportion to its cube. This concept is the subject of entrenched misconception among many adults. This game-like simulation allows kids to use spatial reasoning, rather than formulas, to construct geometric sense of area and volume. This is a Nearpod lesson. In this warm-up lesson students practice identifying the place value and value of digits. They also write numbers. This lesson is most appropriate for 3rd grade students. The lesson takes approximately 20 minutes of class time to complete. By the end of this warm-up lesson, students will be able to read numbers in expanded and word form using place value. They will also be able to write numbers using place value and identify the place value of digits in numbers. This warm-up lesson features work in pairs to help students identify place value. Working with a partner, students identify place values and write numbers. Students review different numbers and demonstrate their understanding of digits in different place values. They read a description of a number based on its place values, and they write the corresponding number. Students also look at the expanded form, as well as the word form, and write the number on the line. Have items ready to complete and extend patterns. You can use blocks, poker chips, candy, cards created for holidays, etc. Hand the materials to your child(ren) and ask them to sort them by likeness. Ask them to create, duplicate, complete, and/or extend a pattern. For example, you can hand them a handful of colored goldfish crackers or colored cereal rings. Once they are sorted, count how many you have of each color. Ask them to select at least 2 colors to make patterns with. Allow them to create more complex patterns as they are ready.
