This is a lesson plan to end a unit on Narrative. During the unit, students came up with a time in their lives that was significant ("a defining moment") and will tell their stories digitally -- through a photo journal using Google docs. The lesson is a remix of Google's Applied Digital Skills lesson "Create a Photo in Google Docs".

The various genres and subgenres are presented to the students using a video and presentation, and use of examples of several fiction, non-fiction, and poetry books. Then, using a mixed-genre set of books, and the notes they took during the presentation, students will identify the genres represented in each set. After students finish reading a book independently, they will use what they learned from the presentation to identify the book's genre in their book reviews for their ELA teacher.

This lesson plan is a simple project to have students show that they can use a template, add pictures of their choice and add a few paragraphs of body text to a document. This is something that can be done in any program, but this specific lesson is designed for Pages (Apple's version of word processing). The idea is to make a summary of school events that have happened in the first two-three weeks of school. This lesson could be modified for any three week stretch of school that aligns to your scope and sequence. The important part of this project is that students learn how to add pictures, use a template and add some text for their desired school activities.
