Media Studies 101 is the open educational resource for media studies studies in New Zealand, Australia, and Pacifica. We have constructed this text so it can be read in a number of ways. You may wish to follow the structured order of 'chapters' like you would in a traditional printed textbook. Each section builds on and refers back to previous sections to build up your knowledge and skills. Alternatively, you may want to go straight to the section you are interested in -- links will help guide you back to definitions and key ideas if you need to refresh your knowledge or understand a new concept.

PBS NewsHour and the Utah Education Network team up for this presentation about the PBS Student Reporting Labs project and StoryMaker platform. Together PBS and UEN provide free projects, lesson plans, storytelling resources, tutorials, support, and mentoring just for you to help you build the next generation of media creators.

Students will learn to turn their story ideas into fully developed pitches. A pitch enables students to explain their story succinctly and also keep their story focused during the production process. Click on the Activities Tab to complete the lesson.

Pre-interviews help you find the right voices (characters) for your story. In the Find Your Story Lesson, you identified potential people to interview and feature in your story. Now you will talk to them to get a sense of whether they are indeed the right people and if they will move your story forward. SRL wants to meet students where they are online -- whether that’s TikTok or Instagram. Used both as a reporting tool and a promotional tool, social media can be integral for student journalists. Use this guide to help find your classroom’s voice online.

Students will identify what they know and don’t know about their story’s topic. Once students know what they don’t know, they will use curiosity to guide research that will result in better developed stories.

Writing a script is intimidating, but actually, breaking the process into small steps makes it MUCH EASIER and will result in a MUCH BETTER story. This lesson shows you how to plan and write a script. It is highly recommended that you use this lesson when students are working on a story. This lesson has several parts. These Scripting Slides can be used throughout the lessons. You might use some or all. Each will take about 50 minutes.

Students will visually map portrayals of their communities in the news media. The result will be a graphic organizer of unique perspectives and story ideas. Click on the Activities Tab to complete the lesson.

This is a 5 day unit about validating sources on the internet and social media.  It is taught so that students understand and respect the obligations of using social media wisely before sharing and the importance of giving credit to creators through citing sources.  It is a blended unit with a final project to be done in Apple's Keynote where students will show what they have learned in a slide show to other students in the class.
