By completing this inquiry, students begin to understand issues revolving around the factors that help to form a people’s identity, as well as the fluidity of defining a group within any predetermined criteria.

It would be bad enough to face the enemy on a battlefield, but being a prisoner of war (POW) could be far worse. During the Civil War, both sides had terrible prison camps, but one particular Georgia camp has become synonymous with inhumane treatment. Fort Sumter outside the town of Andersonville housed 30,000 prisoners in a facility designed for 10,000. Overcrowding and filthy conditions resulted in death by starvation, disease, exposure, or at the hands of other prisoners for nearly half of the POWs at Andersonville.

This is a facsimile of President Andrew Jackson's December 6, 1830 Message to Congress in 1830. In it, he called for the relocation of eastern Native American nations to land west of the Mississippi River in order to open the land for settlement by citizens of the United States. This message confirmed the removal policy already established by the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

This task provides a construction of the angle bisector of an angle by reducing it to the bisection of an angle to finding the midpoint of a line segment. It is worth observing the symmetry -- for both finding midpoints and bisecting angles, the goal is to cut an object into two equal parts. The conclusion of this task is that they are, in a sense, of exactly equivalent difficulty -- bisecting a segment allows us to bisect and angle (part a) and, conversely, bisecting an angle allows us to bisect a segment (part b). In addition to seeing how these two constructions are related, the task also provides an opportunity for students to use two different triangle congruence criteria: SSS and SAS.

Open Middle provides math problems that have a closed beginning, a closed end, and an open middle. This means that there are multiple ways to approach and ultimately solve the problems. Open middle problems generally require a higher Depth of Knowledge than most problems that assess procedural and conceptual understanding.
