This unit plan gives an outline for introducing Genius Hour to your students. It was developed for a third grade class, but can be adapted for any grade level.
Students will practice speaking skills, animating text, and recording to explain the directions for how to prepare a chosen dish. Their ideas of which food to share will first be brainstormed in the iPad Notes. Then Keynote will be used to show a process of how to prepare the food by animating texts or photos. Finally an explanation of the recipe will be captured with a screen recording. This is a lesson plan to have students write a narrative story about a time they were injured. They will then create a digital story from that paper using Adobe Spark. They will have five slides, five voice overs, and music to the slides.
This lesson involves students creating a digital story about a time when they lost a tooth. It will connect to their narrative writing standard in 3rd grade, as well as to the speaking and listening standard when they produce the digital story from their writing and planning.
The class will read Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse or Yours Truly, Goldilocks by Alma Flor Ada, or Dr. Mrs. La Rue by Mark Teague as a lead into writing letters. Teacher will share notes from students. Students will organize ideas to write a letter using the informal letter format to someone.
