This is a computer science lesson plan created by educators in the South Sanpete School District. Students will read a story that describes the first computer bug. This book will help students to see character qualities in a computer scientist who broke social norms, persevered, and loved solving problems. They will then go on to debug programs with bugs using Blue Bots. The lesson is designed for fifth grade and includes modifications for grades 1-5. 

Using popular trade books students will create a character map by first working on their own, and then in small groups. Students will share their work with the whole class.

Coyote tales are part of the Paiute oral tradition used to teach proper behavior and values from an early age. These stories are only told during the winter time. The Coyote illustrates the mischievous nature in all of us. This lesson helps students compare and contrast characters in the story, Coyote and the Geese. Students are asked to reflect on how characters respond to challenges and events by filling out a worksheet and engaging in discussions about the book. Students also learn more about Native American storytelling and its importance in Native cultures. The background information with resources listed helps each teacher become more familiar with the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah (PITU) and their perspective on petroglyphs, pictographs and how long the Paiute people have lived in Southern Utah.

"How Wood Tick Became Flat" is a tale from the Northwestern Band of Shoshone Nation. This tale helps students become familiar with cultural storytelling and its importance in Native cultures. Students will have a brief introduction to the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation and thier location in Utah. This lesson include an experience eliciting discussion and literacy activities. Students will create a diamante poem using a Native American tale. 

"Handsome Coyote and Wildcat" is a Northwestern Band of Shoshone Nation tale. Coyote and Wildcate give us lesson in vanity.  Many Native American tribes have "Coyote Stories." Coyote stories are traditionally only told in the winter season. Coyote stories are meant to entertain or instruct, or both. After reading this tale, students will engage in a lesson of "summarizing" the story. 

Tookwee’nup, legends, are Paiute stories told during the winter months. They are mythical, often humorous, and they contain a moral. Tookwee’nup teach Paiute children why things are like they are. The stories give spiritual instruction and expose the children to human characteristics that we all possess. This lesson uses this Paiute tale to help students learn about fire myth patterns, wildfires and develop vocabulary.
