With guidance and support students will explore using various research tools to help them access information about a specific topic. In this lesson we are learning about bears but you could choose another animal or topic as well.
A look at the history of libraries and the difference it makes in the world.
Children will discuss why we have libraries and how we should act in a library.
Through an orientation for students, they will understand the basics of the library layout and how to utilize search computers efficiently to find books and information.
This lesson is focused on media violence, especially comparing consequences of actions in real life vs. those portrayed in media (i.e., movies, tv, video games, etc.).
What plagiarism looks like and the rules to avoid it. A note taking strategy to prevent coping directly from the text.
Students will be exposed to two non-fiction books, both telling the same true story. They will make connections, gain knowledge, and learn the history behind a well loved children's character. They will analyze the different perspectives presented by each author. After listening to the story students will answer questions.
Students will watch a short video about the parts of a book and then test their memory to see how much they can remember.
Students will pull information from a research article, write the most important and/or interesting facts on several note cards, and create a visual representation (infographic) of the selected important points of their research.
In a shared Google Slide presentation, students will create one slide to present the highlights of their research papers or projects. They will include their research question, thesis statement, and show one credible source they used.

Focus will be on treating previous discussion of their topic as a "conversation" they are taking part in.
The teacher will read But I Read It on the Internet! by Toni Buzzeo to the class. Then, students, working in groups of three, will use the "Gizmo" criteria discussed in the book to evaluate three pre-selected websites. Students will then rank the websites as Good, Better, or Best and write statements to support their ranking choice using vocabulary from the Gizmo.
In this lesson students will complete a reading survey to Students will become aware of their Reader Identity - reading preferences, habits, strengths, weaknesses, and attitudes.
In this lesson there will be books placed on tables around the library with questionnaires for students to answer in the format of "speed dating" to help students choose a book matching their interests and reading level.
In this lesson students will learn how to present a book talk, and prepare to give a book talk.
Using a musical chairs format, students will rotate around the circle -- with a book on each chair around the circle. When the music stops students will sit, pick up the book on their chair, and take turns sharing if their book is fiction or informational and why they would want to read it (the purpose for reading -- entertainment, to learn something, etc).
