    Summary:

This lesson plan is designed to go with our middle school Career research. Students first research a career of choice. After researching their chosen career, they choose one "famous" or well known person in that career to research.

    Background Information:

You will need knowledge of UOSL and the EBSCO Biography reference center.  Search Utah's Online School Library for information regarding this resource. This lesson should take about a class period.

This lesson plan is used to help orient students to UOSL and research. This Biography research lesson plan is made to take about a class period.

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes:

    Learning Intentions:

    • Students will be able to successfully search UOSL and the EBSCO Biography Reference Center to find a person in their chosen career.

    Success Criteria:

    • Students will research a chosen "famous" person in their career and find the needed information.
    • Ex. Students will describe the positive and negative emotions an advertisement aims to evoke.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

    Student Background Knowledge

    • Prior to this lesson, students will need to have a basic understanding of UOSL and have completed their career research, which utilizes UOSL as a source.

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

Students who may need accomodations will use the condensed version of the biography paper.

    Step 3 - Instruction

Begin class by having UOSL displayed so all of the class can see.

Instruct students to have on their desk the biography research paper and a pencil.

Remind students of their career research that they should have just completed.

Model for students how to access UOSL . And then the Biography Reference Center

           - Choose Middle School

          - Choose EBSCO middle School

         - Choose Biography Reference Center : show them how to navigate through the Biography reference center. Specifically point out how to search a person in their chosen career. How to access the full text, view pictures, also specifically the citation tool - reminding them to cite their information.

    Step 4 - Assessments

Students will have their Biography sheet completely filled out when done.

For their career research their end result will be to create a Google Slide of their chosen career. Students will make a Google Slide specifically for their Biography information.
