Buying a Car: Standard 6.RP.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.
This formative assessment exemplar was created by a team of Utah educators to be used as a resource in the classroom. It was reviewed for appropriateness by a Bias and Sensitivity/Special Education team and by state mathematics leaders. While no assessment is perfect, it is intended to be used as a formative tool that enables teachers to obtain evidence of student learning, identify assets and gaps in that learning, and adjust instruction for the two dimensions that are important for mathematical learning experiences (i.e., Standards for Mathematical Practice, Major Work of the Grade).

This lesson is meant to introduce students to the concept of unit rate. It uses a Canva presentation to introduce the concept. For practice, student will calculate the population density of various countries and compare it to the population density of Utah. There is a worksheet to complete during independent practice, an exit ticket, and an extension activity for fast finishers. Image Credits:"Flag Map Of The World" by GDJ is in the public domain through OpenClipArt.org upload agreement"Utah" by Arohletter1 is in the public domain through OpenClipArt.org upload agreementImage Credit: Christian Cragun

Utah Road Trip: Standard 7.RP.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks ½ mile in each ¼ hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction ½/¼ miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour

Videos: Standard 8.EE.5 (Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of the two moving objects has greater speed.).
