Repeated Reading According to research, it is recommended that preschool teachers prepare children for later reading instruction. They can do so by introducing the five critical building blocks for literacy including phonological awareness, letter identification, vocabulary knowledge, print concepts, and a positive attitude toward reading (Henry, 2019). Talk with children about things that can keep them safe in various environments. This can include safety tips for home, school, sports, outside play. You can read Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann for ideas.
Students will move to act out the sections in the story as they are given 2 step directions (Safely place your hands on the ground so your head is upside down and walk backwards, dance a jig like the pig and sing a tune like the loon).
Children will sing simple songs about the weather.
After hearing a familiar story, Child(ren) will create something new to change the plot. For example, what would happen if it were Goldilocks and the Three Cats? DIscuss how that would change the events in the story? Child(ren) could change the characters in a story, the setting of the story, the beginning, middle, or end of a story, the sequence of events in the story, etc.
Children will take turns adding to stories. You can pick a topic and start off by saying “Once upon a time…” and then take turns embellishing and extending the story. The goal is to pay attention to details, attend to one another while building their working memory, focusing their attention, and practicing self-control.
Children will create decorations, party gifts, and pretend food for a party they want to throw. Encourage them to create decorations, hats, signs, invitations, food, etc.
Children will look out the window to determine what the weather conditions are for the day and determine what clothes would help them be comfortable to dress in for the day.
