Owner for a day (Pages/Word Processing Assessment)

Owner for a day (Pages/Word Processing Assessment)

    Overview

Students will practice their design and creativity skills with this project. They will need to make a promotion or advertisement for their favorite team or band/singer. They are in charge of creating a new poster using Pages or a 30-60 second promotional video using iMovie.

The purpose of this assignment is to show that they know and understand design principles and can apply them to make an attractive and relevant promotion. Image created by author.

What would you do if you were in charge for a day?

    Summary & Overview:

What kinds of decisions do CEOs and owners of companies make each day? What if you were in charge of a sports team for a day? What if you were Taylor Swift's manager? What would you have to do to ensure people knew about an upcoming concert or game and track your success to see if you were profitable so you don't get fired? This lesson will help students think through a promotion and use critical thinking skills to make crucial decisions for their company or team.

    Background info:

This is designed to be a summative assessment for students to show that they can create a digital poster (using Pages) or a 30-second movie using (iMovie). They will show elements of design and will need to advertise an upcoming event in a creative and effective way.

    Student Goals & Intended Outcomes

    1. Students can create a digital poster with essential time and date elements
    2. Students can create a digital poster using design elements
    3. Students can use spreadsheet software to manipulate data
    4. Students can work collaboratively and creatively to produce a quality product

    Instruction

    - Get students into groups of 3-4
    - Tell them that they are going to be managers or CEO's for a day. Ask them to think about a team or singer they would like to be the "boss" of for a day. They are going to make a promotion/advertisemnt for the team or singer. They will check and see how many people come to the event based on their promotion.
    - They can use Pages or iMovie or both to create their promotional poster/advertisement video
    - They need to use their design elements and include dates and times for the event so people know when and where to attend.
    - Remind them that they can share the document so they can all collaborate and work together
    - If they want to make a video, they will need to assign roles (camera operator, editor, sound, etc)
    - Students can browse the internet to get ideas to create their own poster or video
    - At the end of the determined time, (two class periods) students will present their poster/video to the class

    Assessment

Teacher will provide the students with a rubric for grading.

    Ideas for Differentiation:

If students need extra help or have difficulty with creating an idea, have them use a template in Pages. This will give them the support that they need.

    Ideas to get them started:

Have students search for their favorite team. Let them look at the main page and their promotions calendar. This will give them ideas of what events are coming up and might get people excited to come.

    Ideas for success:

Have students create a storyboard of shots they will need for their video. This will give them some order and sequence to their video. There are a number of free sounds and music that they can use to make their video even more impactful. This is a great site for free sound and music: https://mixkit.co/free-sound-effects/

    Lesson Plan

    Summary:

This lesson will help students think through a promotion and use critical thinking skills to make crucial decisions for their company or team. Pretend that you don't have Adobe products or high end software to produce a poster. You can make something beautiful with Pages or a similar type word processing document.

    Formative and Summative Assessment Plan:

Formative Assessment before the project begins:

Ask the students about the elements of design that you've covered in class so far:
    - White space
    - Fonts
    - Colors
    - Circular Design
    - Proximity
    - Purpose
    - Contrast

    Summative Assessment

Grading creative work can be difficult. If you use a rubric, then you can allow students the autonomy to make things how they want with defined boundaries. Feel free to use a rubric like the one below looking for key design elements. The teacher will provide the students with a rubric for grading.

    Overview of the project:

Creating something meaningful and professional is a skill that all students need to have. There are a few simple design rules that you need to follow. After you have taught these design principles to your students, they need to show you that they can create something using those skills and tools. There's no better way to do this than give them some purpose so they can show you their creativity. Pretend you are working for a team or band that doesn't have fancy design software. They only have the programs that are loaded onto their computer (Pages, Word, Google Docs). You can still create something beautiful and meaningful if you use the correct design principles. As you get students into a group, they need to make a poster for an event or concert. By giving them the rubric, you can see if they can follow these rules and work collaboratively and creatively.
