    Cook - Make Fry Bread

    Overview

    Children will talk about and measure ingredients to make fry bread. 

    Summary

    Children will follow a recipe to make fry bread.  Cooking allows for new vocabulary to be used while naming ingredients, using words for measurement, and describes ways to follow directions. 

    Materials

    • Ingredients:
      • 3 cups cooking oil or shortening
      • 1 cup All-purpose flour
      • ½ cup milk
      • 1 ½ teaspoons Baking powder
      • ¼  teaspoon salt
    • Cooking Oil
    • Skillet
    • Stove top or hot plate
    • Measuring cups and spoons
    • Large mixing bowl
    • Copy of the book Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard 

    Background for Teachers/Parents

    Find a recipe that works for you.  There is one included above, one included at the end of the story and several easy recipes online. Assist children as you make the bread using caution with the hot skillet as you fry the bread.
