    Background for Teachers

To teach this lesson, you will need an understanding of the community building in your community and where they are located. You will also want to have a basic understanding of what the purpose of the buildings in your community are and how they contribute to your local community. You will also need to have a basic understanding on how to teach students to use an iPad and how to use iMove. Click here for iMovie for iPad tutorial.

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

    Step 1 Goals and Outcomes

    Utah Core Standard:

    • Standard 2 Objective 3b. Identify neighborhood and community symbols and landmarks.

    Learning Intentions:

    • Students will be able to  identify neighborhood and community symbols and landmarks and provide details about how they contribute to the community.

    Success Criteria:

    • Students will take photos during a walking tour of their community and create an iMovie that shows their community and provide details about how the landmarks contribute to their community.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

    Step 2 Planning Instruction

    Student Background Knowledge

    • Review with students how in our school there are different roles and how each role benefits our school. Teach about how the school is a part of a larger community and draw the comparison that just like in schools each person has a role and a job to help the school function, the same is for all the roles that are part of the community in which they live

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

Accomidations: Students may be paired to work with a classmate to take photos and create the iMovie about what they observed in their community.

Extension: Students may add sound effects and titles to their iMovie.

    Step 3 - Instruction

    Step 3 Instruction

    • Teach students that a community is built up of different people who work together to help those who live within the community.
    • Explain what different building that can be in a community and that their function is to help their community.  Talk about how each location has a purpose and does something to benefit their community. Some examples are:
      • Police Station: Is the location where police officers work from. Police officers help to keep our community safe. The poice station is where their offices are located and also where they take those who may be in trouble to.
      • FIre Department: The location where rescue vehicles are stored and maintained. It is where firemen work from so that if they get a call to go help someone in need they can get to the vehicle they need to quickly and get to the person in need as fast as they can.
      • City Building: Where city officals like the Mayor and City Council have their offices. People can take their concerns to them at their offices inside the City building.
      • LIbrary: Place where the community can go to borrow books
      • Post Office: Place where the community can go to send mail and also get mail from if they rent a PO Box.
      • City Park: Place where members of the community can gather.
      • Gas Station: Place where the community can purchase food and other items.
      • Restaurants: Place to gather in the community to eat and purchase food.
      • Schools: Place for children to come together to learn.

Explain that as a class you will be going on a walking tour of the community which your school is in. Explain that students will take photos of locations within their community. When students return to the school they will then follow the directions given to create an iMovie of the photos that they took while on the walking field trip. Explain that they will use the microphone in the iMovie app to provide audio detail about the purpose of the location and how it contributes to the community.  Have students watch the attatched iMovie so that they can see and example of what the end product of the activity is going to be.

Attatched is a sample video of the iMovie.

    Step 4 - Assessments

    Step 4 Assessments
