    Community Garden

    Community Garden

    Overview

In this activity students will collaborate as a team to build a virtual commnuity garden on Google Jamboard.  Individually students will need to demonstrate how area and perimeter are caculated after making a model of a garden plot using square units.

    Summary

Students will design a community garden in small groups on Google Jamboard and calculate the area and perimeter of their vegetable plot.

Format:  Can be used virtually or in a face to face classroom, students must have access to google jamboard.

    Time:  20 - 30 minutes per student

    Background for Teachers

To teach this lesson students and teachers will need a background on how to import pictures and share projects on Google Jamboard. The template for the garden is found in the lesson plan.

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

Students will be able to calculate the area and perimeter of a piece of a garden using square units.  Students will be able to model their understanding using a google jamboard to display a picture and the solution to the area and perimeter of their garden plot.  Students will collaborate as a team over google jamboard in a respectful and cooperative way.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

    Student Prior Knowledge

Students will need to have an understanding of Google Jamboard and how to find the area and perimeter of a plane figure.

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

If your students need accommodations such as multiplication tables, or additional space to show work please add them to the end of the jamboard slides.  Teachers may need to design the garden plots to meet learners objectives.

    Step 3 - Instruction

    1.  Teachers may choose to read a book about gardening or plants that ties into their science curriculum.  I chose to read “Tops and Bottoms” by Janet Stevens

    2. Have students open the Jamboard link: https://jamboard.google.com/d/1ld16fZRacoJFhzDbdkzEif1OoaE1oOxUfs7AuuilzYM/edit?usp=sharing

Students will need to make their own COPY of the jamboard slides for their group and share the new link with their group.

    1. Students read the opening slide for the instructions.  Students should be in groups of 3 to 4 students.  As a group they decide what the name of the garden will be and what types of vegetables they will grow.  Each individual student will find an image of the vegetable they are going to grow and as a group decide a garden layout.

    2. Individual students will place their image in a square unit block and then calculate the area and perimeter of their part of the garden.

    3. Students will be able to record their calculations on the final slide.

    Step 4 - Assessments

Using the attached rubric students will be assessed on how well they work together as a team, complete the assignment, and calculate the area and perimeter of their own vegetable plot.  Students may be required to use a separate jamboard page to show their work.
