This activity is intended to assess your 3rd grade students' ability to find area and perimeter of rectangles and squares. Students will be creating a robot using Google Drawing. They will then find the area and perimeter of each piece of the robot. In this activity students will collaborate as a team to build a virtual commnuity garden on Google Jamboard.  Individually students will need to demonstrate how area and perimeter are caculated after making a model of a garden plot using square units.  

This brief article advocates the use of arrays to model the commutative and distributive properties as well as the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. The author explains how arrays also help children form mental pictures that support their memory and reasoning.

This problem allows students to explore introductory multiplication and division concepts in the context of sharing cookies ("biscuits" in the UK). Cookies are displayed in two different arrays, and students are challenged to divide them equally among two, three, five, and six people and to deal with remainders. Stretch students understanding of perimeter and area through the use of these Venn diagrams. Students try to find the missing information that will fill the requirements for the given area and perimeter problem. If students are just learning area and perimeter, these would work for extension questions for those students who catch on quickly.
