Capturing Utah's Symbols and Landmarks

Overview

Students will take digital pictures of Utah symbols and landmarks they find in their neighborhoods or communities. They will email them to their teacher, and the teacher will put them into a slideshow or movie to share with the class. This lesson was created by Traci Rindlisbach.

Background for Teachers

Teachers will need to know how to use their email. Download or move a picture from email to a slideshow or movie. Proficiency with Adobe Spark would be helpful, but not necessary.

By actively looking for and photographing Utah state symbols and landmarks, students will realize they are all around them.

Instructional Procedures

Materials:

  • Smartphones
  • Computers
  • Teacher's email

Instructional Procedures:

After teaching the Utah symbols and landmark unit, teachers should email parents about the project. Students and parents should be given examples of Utah landmarks and symbols, but not be limited to the examples. 

Students will have two weeks to submit a maximum of 5 pictures representing Utah landmarks and symbols. Students and parents will be encouraged to do additional research to find interesting and unique landmarks; however, it will not be required.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Scaffolds:

Struggling learners can be given a list of symbols and landmarks to photograph to reduce the overwhelming amount of information available online. 

Extensions:

Students can create their own movie, slideshow, or original piece of work representing Utah state symbols and landmarks. Slideshows/movies/student work must be under 2 minutes and can be shared with the class.
