In air transportation, efficiency is time and time is money. Even small delays in the schedules of passenger airplanes result in lost time for both air carriers and their passengers. During any passenger flight, there are two time-consuming operations that depend mostly on human behavior: boarding and disembarking the aircraft.
Prior to the arrival of European colonization on the North American continent, the ecological bio-diversity was much richer than we currently know in the 21st Century. Prior to the colonization animals such as the American Bison (Bison bison), Eastern Elk (Cervus canadensis canadiensis), Eastern Cougar (Puma concolor couguar), and Wolf (Canis lupus) were commonly seen across the North American continent. However, with the colonization from the old world came old world prejudices and practices. Within two hundred and fifty years all of these species were eradicated from the Eastern United States or extinct. Over the course of the last century an effort has been made to halt the loss of the North American fauna with the creation of national parks and animal preservation habitats, and in the last half of 20th century work was being done to reintroduce that fauna back to its natural habitat. This process has been used with several different species; however, no species has been given as much attention in the Eastern United States as that of the American Elk.
An art gallery is holding a special exhibition of small watercolors. The exhibition will be held in a rectangular room that is 22 meters long and 20 meters wide with entrance and exit doors each 2 meters wide as shown below. Two security cameras are fixed in corners of the room, with the resulting video being watched by an attendant from a remote control room. Several cities in the US are starting bike share programs. Riders can pick up and drop off a bicycle at any rental station. These bicycles are typically used for short trips within the city center, either one-way or roundtrip. The idea is to help people get around town on a bike instead of a car. Those making longer trips (such as commuting to work) are likely to use their own bikes. Some of the challenges are how to determine where to locate the rental stations, how many bikes to have at each station, how/where to add new locations as the program grows, how many bikes to move to another location and when (time of day, day of week).
A number of communities (campuses, towns, cities, etc.) around the world have proposed and enacted plastic water bottle bans in some form.
In 2013 the small town of Concord, Massachusetts (population approximately 19,000) became the first town or city in the United States to ban the sale of single-serving Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles less than or equal to 1 liter (34 ounces) containing water which is non-sparkling and non-flavored (in other words, plain water). The sale of water in bottles of any size made of other types of plastic or other materials, as well as PET bottles of flavored or sparkling water, soda, tea, juices, and other non-plain water beverages, regardless of size, is allowed. Some people rent a car when they are going on a long trip. They are convinced they save money. Even if they do not save money, they feel that the knowledge that "if the car breaks down on the trip, the problem is the rental company's" makes the rental worth it. Analyze this situation and determine under what conditions renting a car is a more appropriate option. Determine mileage limits on one's own car and a break-even value of "ease of mind" for the driver and her family.
In our school and social lives we exist in a mobile electronic world. Each day we "plug in" and charge our electronic devices and equipment. These electronics may range from small items (cell phones) to large items (electric vehicles). While in our own home, our family is most likely responsible for purchasing the charging equipment, and then paying an electric company/provider for the electricity we use.
The proliferation of electronic buses (e-buses) in cities across the globe represents a significant stride toward sustainable urban transport. With the mounting concerns over air pollution and climate change, many cities have been prompted to reconsider their reliance on traditional diesel buses. According to a recent report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, e-buses are set to dominate the public transit sector, becoming the majority of all buses on the road globally by 2032. China has been particularly noteworthy in this transition, as it is home to most of the world’s e-buses, driven in large part by government policies that prioritize electric vehicles and stringent emission standards. Cities throughout the world (e.g., Bogota, Colombia, New York, USA, and Berlin, Germany) are also making concerted efforts to incorporate e-buses into their fleets, albeit at a more gradual pace.
What can we make of the massive amount of crime statistics collected in major cities? Beyond just reporting numbers, how can we use these data to determine the safeness of a city?
No one wants to spend more money than necessary on heating and air conditioning. But, everyone wants to be comfortable and cozy while at home. The development of programmable thermostats was an initial effort to assist in reducing energy costs. With a programmable thermostat, you can manually preset a schedule of temperature increases and decreases for weekdays and weekends, and day and night periods, to keep your home cool or warm when needed, but save energy when not needed. Any adjustment to the schedule requires a manual change at each thermostat.
A regional city has had lots of problems with gangs and violence over the years. The mayor, chief of police, and city council need your help. Data are available for the following: Incidents of violence, Homicides, Assaults, Regional Population (Census data), Unemployment, Unemployment rate, High School enrollment, High school drop outs, Graduation rate, Drop out rate, Prison population, Released on parole, Parole violations, Percent of parole violations, and Juvenile Inmates. Analyze and model these data to give the city a plan to reduce violence. After you complete your analysis and model, prepare a news release for the mayor briefly outlining your proposals that recommend a campaign strategy to curb the violence.

Additionally, a state popular vote, no matter how close, awards all electoral votes to the winner of that plurality. Create a mathematical model that is different than the current electoral system.
The Emergency Service Coordinator (ESC) for a county is interested in locating the countyâ€™s three ambulances to best maximize the number of residents that can be reached within 8 minutes of an emergency call. The county is divided into 6 zones and the average time required to travel from one zone to the next under semi-perfect conditions is summarized in the following Table 1.
