The Science Core Guides are created to provide guidance for developing effective instruction aligned to the Utah Science with Engineering Education (SEEd) Standards. They are intended to support teachers, administrators, science specialists, instructional coaches, parents, and other stakeholders as they plan instruction at a local level.

The Core Guides are not intended to be read from cover to cover. They are meant as a resource document to be used, when needed, to support teacher professional learning and curriculum decisions. They are not meant to be used by students, and therefore they may not be written in student-friendly language. The Core Guides are meant to inform teachers and leaders as they make science curriculum decisions.

The Science Core Guides are created to provide guidance for developing effective instruction aligned to the Utah Science with Engineering Education (SEEd) Standards. They are intended to support teachers, administrators, science specialists, instructional coaches, parents, and other stakeholders as they plan instruction at a local level.

A variety of online simulations, strategies of thinkÐpair-share, Edmodo survey polls, model drawings, student labs and writing pieces (summary/evidence based response/acrostic poetry) will help students understand the concept of scientific modeling of matter particles. A scientific model is an abstract, simplified representation of a system. A model should explain data, agree with what we know about the Laws of Nature and can be used to make a prediction. The Crosscutting Concept for this lesson is ÒNatural objects exist from the very small to the immensely largeÓ so a focus will be placed on matter in the gaseous state and how it is detected.

The purpose of this Guide is to provide additional material to educators interested in using the Stratovolcanoes of the World poster published by the National Geophysical Data Center in August
2000. For each volcano featured on the poster, NGDC provides a map showing the location of the volcano, a table of facts, a short fictional story to bring the volcano to life, and a section with questions to ponder, suggested activities, and additional references. Key words in bold throughout the text, are defined in the Glossary. Finally, we provide a more extensive list of references and resources as well as some simple activities suitable for grades 5-8. Note: It needs to to be less direct instruction and more investigation. But all the info is there and nice ELA reading (NSTA).
