    Overview

    This lesson is to help students to understand and use the scientific method by producing a short film.

    Summary

    This assignment is to help the student to understand the scientific method. It can take upwards of a minimum of two class periods to complete.

     

    Background for Teachers

    To teach this lesson, you will need an understanding of the scientific method. Discuss with the students as many examples of how the scientific method can be used in science and everyday life.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

    • Prior to this lesson, students will need to have an understanding of how the scientific method is used to solve everyday problems.
    • They should have a good background on the steps of the scientific method and how to apply it to everyday activities.
    • They should have an understanding of the following terms and concepts:
      • Problem/question
      • Collect Data
      • Forming a hypothesis
        • What is a hypothesis?
        • Why is it also called an educated guess?
      • Experiment
        • What is an experiment?
        • What does the experiment test?
      • Record Results
        • Why is it important to record the results of the experiment?
        • What do you do if your hypothesis is wrong?
        • What are some ways to record the results?
      • Conclusion
        • Why should we make a conclusion?
        • What is the purpose of the conclusion?

    Step 3 - Instruction

    Assignment: Lesson plan

    The students will demonstrate their knowledge of the scientific method by producing a stop motion film or other forms of media about the scientific method.

    The students should prepare the following before they produce their media.

    1. Storyboard
    2. Script
    3. Works Cited and credits
