Background for Teachers
To teach this lesson, you will need an understanding of MyPlate nutritional guidelines and imovie. You will also need ipads for student use.
This lesson is designed for Utah FCS Exploration strands and standards. Strand 7, Standard 3: Discuss the current USDA Dietary Guidelines and MyPlate.
Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes
Learning Intentions:
- Students will be able to identify the why behind nutritional guidelines and know how to find current nutritional guidelines.
Success Criteria:
- Students will create an imovie trailer for one researched section of MyPlate.
Step 2 - Planning Instruction
Student Background Knowledge
- Prior to this lesson, students will need to have an understanding of how to find information online, and how to use imovie on the ipads.
- If students have not learned this spend some time in your lesson instructing them on how to navigate https://www.myplate.gov/ and https://support.apple.com/guide/imovie-ipad/welcome/ipados
Strategies for Diverse Learners
- Some ideas for meeting the needs of diverse learners in this lesson are: Grouping instead of working solo, using different technology to present findings, providing students with articles to supplement their resources, and providing additional time.
Step 3 - Instruction
Before class: write the success criteria on the board (Students will create an imovie trailer for one researched section of MyPlate.)
Starter/Bell Question: Think, Pair, Share. In your opinion what is the most important food group, WHY?
- Have students share with a partner, then with the class. IF you would like you can have an informal debate with your students about the most important food group.
Learning Activity 1: MyPlate background information. Go through the slide show (attached below) about each section of MyPlate with your students to give them an understanding of MyPlate. This is also a great time to show them myplate.gov and how to navigate and find information on it.
Learning Activity 2: Using ipads have students reasearch and gather some facts and pictures about their favorite section of MyPlate.
Learning Activity 3: (Assessment) Have students assemble their gathered information and pictures and create an imovie advertisment for their chosen section of MyPlate. Assignment paper for students is attached. Also see attached example.
Step 4 - Assessments
Student learning will be assessed via their imovie MyPlate advertisment using the rubric on the attached assignment.
