    Summary

In this lesson, students will learn and create a digital story.  This lesson will take approximately 45-50 minutes and is taught face to face with time to work on the iPads.

    Background for Teachers

To teach this lesson, you will need an understanding of iPad, creating digital stories, and constructing a story board.  Students should be familiar with creating narratives and the editing process.

The following resources can be useful

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

    Learning Intentions:

    • Students will be able to write and create a digital story
      • Stories will include either a narrator and/or characters and organize an even sequence that unfolds naturally.
      • Use dialogue and description to develop experiences and events to show the responses of characters to situations.
      • Use a variety of transitional words and phrases to manage the sequence of events.
      • Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
      • Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.
    • Students will be able to edit and peer review other stories.
    • Students will be able to create a storyboard. Students will be able to find media or create media for their story.
    • Students will be able to narrate their story using a script.
    • Students will be able to share their stories.

    Success Criteria:

    • Students will move through a process of planning, editing, creating a storyboard, adding media, narrating and sharing their digitial story.
    • Stories will be organized and unfold naturally.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

    Student Background Knowledge

    • Prior to this lesson, students will need to have an understanding
      • iMovie
      • Editing process and peer review
      • Creating a narrative

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

Some students may need more time to complete project.  Students who struggle with reading/writing may shorten their stories to main points and use pictures to tell the story.

    Step 3 - Instruction

    • Share example of a personal narrative digital story.
      • Talk about what makes the story interesting.
      • Brainstorm with students what they may like to share for their personal narrative.
      • Students will write their personal narrative.  Story should include 5-10 sequenced events including introduction and conclusion.
      • Students will edit drafts by having two different peers review answering two questions. (Each peer must only review two other narratives.)
        • What do you like about the narrative?
        • What do you think would make it better?
      • Students will use feedback to revise draft.
      • Students will create a story board using visual and audio.  Visuals may be drawings, videos they create or pictures from the internet.  Audio must be included with each visual.

      • Students may also use Soundsabound to add music or sound effects.
      • Using iMovie students will then use their storyboard to create their digital story.
      • Students will share their digital story with the class.
