The traditional approach to instruction relies on all students in each classroom being at the same place in their learning journey each day. We know this ideal can be practically impossible to achieve. By leveraging blended learning tools, innovative planning and facilitation practices that put students at the center of their learning, educators can create opportunities for truly personalized, competency based learning. In this session, we will explore the support that educators need in order to implement self-paced, mastery-based learning with their students and how administrators can create a culture of innovation that will ultimately respond to all learners’ needs.

Traditional teaching models and grading systems are subject to bias and inaccurately reflect student learning. Transitioning to a culture of personalized, competency-based learning means more than updating our grading scale, it means updating our approach to teaching and learning. In this session, we will explore what a mastery-based classroom looks like and learn how Utah’s Career Path High School English Department used the tools and resources from the Modern Classroom Project’s Virtual Mentorship Program to support their shift to PCBL.
