    Let's learn Chinese through photography

    Overview

    In this lesson, students will learn three different photo shooting skills: Silhouette, Shadows abd Reflection. At the same time, students will be taught how to use Chinese to describe a place they like. Then students needs to use one of photogtaphy skills to take a picture of  one place they went and they like, and describe the picture they took by using target language.

    Summary

    This lesson plan is designed to teach Chinese language to students by incorporating mobile photography as a tool for enhancing their language skills. The students will be taught to take pictures and use them to create visual narratives, incorporating Chinese characters and phrases. The lesson plan will include an exemplar project and a rubric to assess the students' mastery of the lesson objectives.

     

    Background for Teachers

    Visuals are an effective tool for teaching languages as they provide a way to convey meaning through images, colors, and symbols. Mobile photography is a popular activity amongst students, and incorporating it in language learning can make it more engaging and fun.

    Teacher and students need to know basic knowledge about mobile photography and how to operate the phone.

     

    Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

    • To enable students to use Chinese language to express themselves visually through photography.
    • To enhance students' creativity and communication skills.
    • To develop students' ability to use Chinese characters and phrases to create visual narratives.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

    • Grade level: 7-8
    • Duration: 2 weeks
    • Materials:

    1) Mobile devices with cameras or chrombooks

    2) Chinese language vocabualry and sentences 

    3) exemplar project, and rubric.

    accomadation provided: students who does not have a personal smartphone with caremra or any other deviced with camera will be provided a classroom-use chromebook by teacher to finish the task.

    Step 3 - Instruction

     

    The lesson plan will be divided into three parts:

    Part 1: Introduction (4 days)

    • Teacher will introduce the concept of mobile photography and its importance in language learning. In this part, teacher will show some examples of different landscape pictures and have and discussion: what elements in these pictures make them so stunning? After discussion, teachers show the concept of "Silhouette" "Shadows" and "Reflection". Activity in this lesson: match the pcitures to the correct three photogaraphy skills.

     

    • Teacher will provide an overview of Chinese characters and phrases that can be used in visual narratives. In this lesson, teachers will teach students different expression to describe a place. The vocabualry needed are: 美丽 beautiful 山 mountains 河流rivers differen colors 不同的颜色. The sentence structures students needs to master are: 坐落于 located at 我喜欢这里的原因是___the reason why I like here is because______. Teachers will lead a picture walk discussion with students to practice all the langauge knowleged mentioned above. Students needs to answer the questions teacher posted by writing a paragraph.
    • Students will be introduced to digital citizenship skills such as copyright, citations, and responsible posting. Here is a nearpod lesson about how to be a good citizenship that teachers can use. Here is the code for accessing the lesson: IWX3U

    Part 2: Photography and Language Practice (3 days)

    Students will be asked to take pictures on their mobile devices and use Chinese characters and phrases to create visual narratives. Visual narratives can encompass individual images, series of images, and sequences of images created with the intent to tell a story (source: google). Teachers will show different examples of visual narratives to spark and inspire students creativity. In this lesson, students just need to take an individual pictures with a paragraph (no less than three sentences) to desceibe a pllace they went and they like. In order to describe the picture better, students need to answer the following questions: 1. Where is it? 2. What does this place look like? 3. Why you pick this place. At the same time, students needs to pick one of three photogaraphy skills to take the picture: "Silhouette" "Shadows" and "Reflection".

    Part 3:  Project share (1 day)

    • Students will create a final project that incorporates mobile photography and Chinese language.
    • Teacher will provide feedback on the students' work and encourage them to refine their ideas.
    • Students will be asked to share their work with their classmates and students need to comment two their peers by demonstrating the digital citizenship skills.
    • Teacher will provide a rubric to assess the students' mastery of the lesson objectives.

     

    Step 4 - Assessments

     

    • Students will create a final project that incorporates mobile photography and Chinese language.

    Requirements:

    Students need to answer the following questions: 1. Where is it? 2. What does this place look like? 3. Why you pick this place. At the same time, students needs to pick one of three photogaraphy skills to take the picture: "Silhouette" "Shadows" and "Reflection".
