    Materials

    Background for Teachers

    Students do a word study of the word cooperation and talk about what strengthens the community when Horton hears a Who. Students will be given a word on a card from the text to raise as they hear the word read. After their reading, the participants will group the words in to families to see chunking. After reading the text, discussion will follow about what the moral of the story is and how that relates to strong communities.

    Instructional Procedures

    1. Distribute word cards and explain to students that when they hear you say their word, they need to raise their card high in the air, then put it back down.
    2. Read through Horton Hears a Who.
    3. When book is completed, have students match up with other people in the room that have the same chunk as they do. Together, they mark their chunks and then place the marked word card in the pocket chart forming a column of like chunks
    4. The Word is _________________________ and the chunk I _______ 1, 2, 3. . .
