    During this activity students will become familiar with a variety of directional words such as North, South, East, West, up, down, etc.

    During this activity students will become familiar with a variety of directional words such as North, South, East, West, up, down, etc.

    Materials

    • grid that includes a compass rose
    • crayons
    • pencil
    • writing paper
    • manipulatives to use as markers

    Background for Teachers

    Directional words help us understand positions on maps. These words include: North, South, East, West, up, down, above, below, left, right, near, and far.

    Instructional Procedures

    Invitation to Learn
    Blindfold a participant and have them go through a maze while listening and following directions.

    Instructional Procedures

    1. Put students in small groups or with a partner.
    2. Pass out grids to each group.
    3. Students need to place two different markers on the grid.
    4. Students must find a way to get from one marker to the other through the use of directional clues.
    5. Once students are familiar with this process they need to record their steps on a sheet of paper.

     

    Extensions

    Possible Extensions/Adaptations
    Create a larger grid, put more objects on the grid, and play a version of Battleship.

    Teacher observes and checks for accuracy of directions.
