- grid that includes a compass rose
- crayons
- pencil
- writing paper
- manipulatives to use as markers

Directional words help us understand positions on maps. These words include: North, South, East, West, up, down, above, below, left, right, near, and far.

Invitation to Learn
Blindfold a participant and have them go through a maze while listening and following directions.
Instructional Procedures
- Put students in small groups or with a partner.
- Pass out grids to each group.
- Students need to place two different markers on the grid.
- Students must find a way to get from one marker to the other through the use of directional clues.
- Once students are familiar with this process they need to record their steps on a sheet of paper.
Extensions
Possible Extensions/Adaptations
Create a larger grid, put more objects on the grid, and play a version of Battleship.
