Summary
Children require lots of practice and patience as they learn to use writing materials. Providing multiple opportunities to develop drawing and writing skills is important at this age.
As children are ready, encourage them to create simple strokes after a model. You will notice details and their abilities will increase as they are ready.
Provide support that your child(ren) may need. They may need to trace onto a highlighted stroke or copy from a model once a stroke has been drawn for them, etc. Drawing vertical lines, horizontal lines and circles will come before learning to draw shapes or make an X .
Note: Holding a penny, playdough, or pom pom in the palm can support proper pencil grip. Shorter handles on paintbrushes or use of golf pencils can also help.
