    Introduction to Digital Citizenship

    Introduction to Digital Citizenship

    Overview

In this lesson, teachers will be introducing technology. They will define what technology is as well as jobs devices that students are familiar with do for us. Students will also learn and share how technology is used wisely while at school.

    Standard K.CS.1
Select computing devices that perform a variety of tasks accurately and quickly based on user needs and preferences.

    1. Students will select computing devices (phone, tablet, computer, cameras, software, 3D printers, etc.) and understand that they can be used to aid in a task (email, text message, voice calls, videos, digital imaging, modeling, etc.).

    Summary

In this lesson, teachers will be introducing technology. They will:

    -define it

-label different types of technology and each device helps us

    -take a technology poll

-share types of technology they use at home

-and learn why we use technology at school

This lesson will take 20 minutes and is best when done face-to-face, in an area such a rug spot together.

    Background for Teachers

To teach this lesson, teachers will need to be familiar with different types of technology (printer, phone, ipad, laptop/chromebook, watch, microphone and beebot/robot) and what each device helps people do.

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

    Standard K.CS.1
Select computing devices that perform a variety of tasks accurately and quickly based on user needs and preferences.

    1. Students will select computing devices (phone, tablet, computer, cameras, software, 3D printers, etc.) and understand that they can be used to aid in a task (email, text message, voice calls, videos, digital imaging, modeling, etc.).

Students will be able to identify different technology devices and how they help us.

Students will be able to share correct ways we use technology at school.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

Students will most likely be familiar with most of the technology devices and what each does. However, this is an introductory lesson, students do not need to have any understanding of technology before this lesson.

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

    Need support: state objective, pair-share

Extension: use rich vocabulary, respond to curiosity

    Step 3 - Instruction

    Ask: What is technology?

Have students share with classmates their definition of what they think technology is. Have a few students share with the class their definition. Share the technology definition in resources below with class.

    Ask: Do you use technology?

Have students share with classmates yes or no. Have a few students share the device they are familiar with and have other students touch their shoulders if they have used that same device.

Today we are going to talk about technology and how we can use it here at school to help us learn. We are going to see some pictures of some technology tools some of you might recognize. If you know what it is cover your mouth with your hands. Open the technology devices resource below. Show each device one at a time. Have students cover their mouth if they know what it is used for. Call on students to share what each device is called as well as what we use it for.

It is important for us to use technology the correct way. I'm going to share some ideas about technology and you get to decide if it's a correct way for us to use technology at school and give it a thumbs up OR if it's not a correct way for us to use technology at school and give it a thumbs down.

    Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down:

-We should only use technology at school to watch silly youtube videos.

-We can use technology at school to help prepare us for the future.

-We can use technology at school to learn and make connections.

-We can use technology wisely at school when we practice skills on the chromebooks.

-We can use technology at school when we play fun learning games.

-We should spend the whole time at school playing on our chromebooks.

    Step 4 - Assessments

Have students share with classmates the name of 2 technology devices talked about today. Have them share a way they can use technology at school correctly.

If time (or on another day) students can draw a picture of them using a device and if able to write a sentence (or dictate) to go with their picture.

    Some examples:

I log off when my teacher asks me to.

It is not good to be on a chromebook for a long time.

I know that a printer helps us print.

I like to use the ipad during center time.
