    Blend and Segment

    Blend and Segment

    Overview

Children will learn simple hand gestures to break words into syllables, show the beginning sound and the rest of the word as they blend and segment each word. They will practice with 5 new words per activity.

    Summary

Pick 5 words to break into syllables, blend, and segment each week.  These words can be tied to children’s interests, new vocabulary learned, seasons, holidays, or favorite stories.

Use simple hand gestures to break words into syllables, show the beginning sound and the rest of the word as you blend and segment each word.  Several examples of hand gestures can be found online.

As a resource, Heggerty is a program that provides 35 weeks of phonemic awareness lessons that take approximately 8 minutes a day, 5 days/week.  There are videos on YouTube to demonstrate hand motions for syllables, blending, and segmenting. This resource includes several phonemic awareness activities that are great for teaching foundational reading skills.

    Materials

    • Print out the selected 5 words to manipulate.  Adding a visual representation of the word meaning may also be helpful.
    • Practice your selected hand movements

    Background for Teachers/Parents

Know your child(ren) and their levels. You may need to demonstrate each skill to have them repeat the movements with you in the beginning.  Make it engaging and fun.
