    This is a lesson for preschool children. This is a lesson about community helpers in our town! 



    Background for Teachers

    In this lesson we will be talking about community helpers! The teacher will be introducing different people that help us in our community. 

    Here is a website with helpful information for teaching community helpers to preschool students.


    Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes


    Students will be able to draw and explain what they want to be when they grow up! 

    Standard for this lesson- Utah Core Standards for Early Learning (ages 3-5)

    „ Standard SS 3 yr.3.1 Recognize people and places within the home, classroom, school, neighborhood, and community.

    Step 2 - Planning Instruction

    The teacher will have the students come to the rug.  The teacher will play a guessing game with the class. The teacher  will give the students some clues and the  tudents will answer  (pick students who are sitting quietly.) 

    1.  This person works at a hospital and helps you when you are sick. ( A Doctor)

    2. This person works at the post office and helps mail letters ? ( A mail carrier)

    3. This person helps when there is a fire and keeps you safe. (  A Fire fighter)

    4. This person works at a school and helps teach reading and math. ( A teacher)

    5. This person works at a bank and helps you with your money. ( A banker)

    The teacher will then tell the class they are going to talk about community helpers. The teacher will write on the board community helper. She will explain to the class that a community helpers are -people who live and work in our communities.

    The teacher  will then get brown paper bags.( Inside the bags will be dress up clothes for different people in the community.) The students will take turns trying on different community helper outfits. 

    The teacher  will then show the class these 2  youtube videos.

    The teacher  will ask the students. " What different people did you see?" (answers could be- a nurse, a dancer, an astronaunt, a doctor, a lawyer, a president, a teacher)

    The teacher will have the students go to their tables. 

     The teacher will say, "We are going to do a think-pair-share moment. First, think about what do you want to be when you grow up. Second, pair up with the person sitting across from you. Third, share with your partner what you want to be when you grow up." She will give the students paper, pencils, and markers.  She will explain to the students they are going to draw what they want to be when they grow up and share with everyone!
