    Students will increase their knowledge of Internet safety. Students will explore and identify dangers on the Internet and learn ways to avoid situations that might be threatening or harmful.

    Intended Learning Outcomes

    Students will be able to identify online threats, appropriate communication skills, and how to protect themselves from inappropriate Internet behavior.

    Instructional Procedures

    Introduction: (5 min.)

    The Internet can be a wonderful resource for:

    • Research
    • School reports
    • Communication w/ teachers
    • Communication w/ friends
    • Playing interactive games
    • Buying and selling merchandise
    • Managing accounts

    With one punch of a few letters on the keyboard you can literally access the world.

    Today we are going to talk about identifying and avoiding situation that could threaten your safety on the internet.

    Going out on the net is like going to a costume party where everyone's identity is a mystery. Unless you know your friends, assume you don't know to whom you are talking. Strangers on the internet can take advantage of you by pretending to be your friend. You have no way of knowing who that person is and what they may be after.

    Lesson Body: (65 min.)

    What are some of the dangers you might find on the internet?
    (Record their answers on the board)

    • Posting Pictures
    • Posting Personal Information

    Cyber-Safety- Statistics (Word Doc)

    • Share some of the statistics.
    • Emphasize the need for education.
    • Why are some of these statistics so alarming?
    • What risks are teenagers taking on the internet?

    Internet Safety Videos

    Depending on the emphasis you want for this lesson - select 5-6 videos from the video list below. (Make sure you preview each video before showing it to your class.)

    1. Have the students fill out the worksheet.
    2. Facilitate a short discussion
    3. Encourage students to share their comments from the worksheet with the class.

    Conclusion: (20 min.) Hand out and review "Safe Surfing Tips"

    Last 5-7 minutes
    Have the students fill out the final section of their video worksheet. (My Goals for Internet Safety)

    Homework Assignment: Handout the Mobile Foldable Instruction Sheet along with the Rubric.

    Assignment: Create a "Mobile Foldable" using information from "Safe Surfing Tips" and your five goals for internet safety.

     

    Assessment Plan

    Students will be graded on their Internet Safety Worksheet. Students will set five specific goals for staying safe on the internet. Homework-Students will create a "mobile foldable" using their goals and information on internet safety
