Background for Teachers

We do calendar every morning.  We sing the months of the year song as part of calendar time.  We talk about weather changing all year. This lesson is a way for the students to show the teacher that they know what happens in the 4 seasons.

Here is the standard for the lesson found on the UEN website.

STRAND 1: WEATHER

Weather is the combination of sunlight, wind, snow, or rain, and temperature in a particular place at a particular time. Humans can plan and prepare for different weather conditions.

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

Goal- Students will be able to put different items into the 4 seasons- winter, spring, summer, and fall.

Outcome- Students will put items in the correct season.  The teacher will take pictures of the items and make a video to show the class.

Step 2 - Planning Instruction

This is a 3-4 preschool class. The teacher can put the students in partners- a 3 year old with a 4 year old so they can work together on the assigment.

Prior to this lesson the students will need to learn the months of the year song. ( song is the same tune as 10 little indians-January, February, March, and April, May, June, July, and August, September, October, November, December, these are the months of the year.)

The teacher can print the seasons picture- same picture as the title imagine at the top of the lesson. Students can see the seasons.

The teacher will get the 4 seasons youtube videos ready.

Find the book - Hop-ped all YEAR. by Keith Baker

The teacher will get different clothes and seasonal items for each of the 4 seasons. coats, hats, gloves, swimming suits, towels, sunglasses, football, umbrella, scarecrow, jackets, and sweatshirts.

The teacher will write WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER, FALL on 4 different papers.

Step 3 - Instruction

The teacher will have the preschool students come and sit on the floor. The teacher will have the kids sing the months of the year song. ( song is the same tune as 10 little indians-January, February, March, and April, May, June, July, and August, September, October, November, December, these are the months of the year.)

The teacher will ask the students "How many months are in a year?" Answer-12

The teacher will then read the book Hop-ped all YEAR. by Keith Baker. As the teacher reads the book she will stop at each page. She will ask the students " What do you see on this page?" ( Each page is a month of the year with different things about the month. ex. Jan- snow Feb. hearts March- kites/ St. Patrick's Day)

The teacher will point to each student and ask them "When is your birthday?" (The teacher can use the birthday calendar list on the wall by the teachers desk to make sure the kids say the right date.)

The teacher will explain to the students that each year we have 4 seasons. WINTER- SPRING- SUMMER- FALL. The teacher will show the students these 2 youtube videos that explain the 4 seasons.

The teacher will point to the SPRING square and ask, " What do you see? Answer- birds, bird houses, butterflies. The teacher will point to the SUMMER square and ask, " What do you see? Answer- water, beach towel, umbrella, sunshine.

The teacher will explain that we wear different clothes throughout the year. The teacher will have clothes and items on the floor. The teacher will read each paper (which has the 4 different seasons written on them). WINTER-SPRING-SUMMER-FALL. The teacher will explain that the students need to look at an item and put in the correct season.  Then the teacher will take 4 pictures. (one picture of each season and the items used in that season.)  The teacher will create an Adobe Spark video and show the class. The teacher will explain that Digital Citizenship means you say kind things about other childrens work.  The teacher will explain that as the class watches the video the students all need to be kind and  say 1 thing they liked about the video.
