    Learning Hub Conversation Skills


    This lesson is a Unit to help students learn more about who they are and to be able to share their story with others.  They focus on diversity, dignity, culture and their country.  The learnign hub has different lessons and activities to help students to improve their conversation skills and pronuncation skills.  


    This class is a mixed level class for Intermediate to Advanced ESOL students working on improving their conversation and pronuncation skills.


    • Time frame:  2 months,  2 classes a week for 1.5 hours a class
    • Format:  Face to Face


    Students will become familiar with the terms and meanings to express their identity through speaking and listening activities.   Students will recognize the importance of others and see the differences and similarities in others..  Students will create an interactive presentation about their country and identity to share with the class. They will  have a choice in how they create their interactive presentation..

    Learning Intentions:

    • Students will be able to express themselves clearly and accurately to others in the class.
    • Students will be able to use correct intonation and stress in their speaking.

    • Students will be able to listen to others' comments and respond correctly.


    • The importance of treating people with dignity and respect in different situations.

    • How to use appropriate vocabulary and words to express their own story so people know who they really are.

    Success Criteria:

    • Students will be able to understand correct pronunciation of vowel sounds in different words.  

    • Students will be able to understand the importance of different vocabulary words and how they can use them in their speaking to express themselves.

    • Students will have an understanding of different cultures and learn that just because things are different doesn’t make them wrong.

    • Ask and answer questions in a conversation while showing respect to others opinions. 

    • Create a portfolio about themselves and their country to share with others.

    Student Background Knowledge

    • Prior to this lesson, students will need to have an understanding of how to create a presentation on a poster, powerpoint, prezi or google slide.  
    • Students will share their own background knowledge of being in a new country and sharing their culture with others. 

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

    The teacher can give printed papers for those who have a harder time on the computer.  The teacher can scaffold and give more sentences options or a dialgue that the students can follow and fill in the blanks with their information.

    Follow the unit lessons on the Learning Hub.  There are many different lessons and activities for students to complete.  It is still evolving so continue to look back for added lessons to the Unit throughout the school year.  The Unit has lessons for different activities to enhance the students abilities to practice their conversation and pronuncation skills.  The teacher can use these lessons to work along with what they are already doing or as a lone Unit.  The main focus in on getting students to be able to share their story and to create a presentation to share with the class about themselves and their country.

    • Vocabulary Questioning
    • Student self-reflection
    • Complete a presentation about their country with a tour on google earth.
    • Performance their tongue twisters and poems and correct their pronunciation.
    • Interviews between students and present what they learned.
