Summary

This assignment is intended to be a hands-on, brief research report as students explore prospective colleges.  The expectation is that students choose a college they are interested in, and research the location, housing options, tuition costs, available majors, and application deadlines. Students will be expected to find pictures of the campus to help determine if the college feels like a good fit.

  • This is considered the Term Final. It will be assigned at Midterm, and be due the Week prior to end of term. So, approximately 3-4 weeks.
  • This is primarily a virtual assignment
  • Created by the SFHS Counseling Team.

Background for Teachers

Research shows that a major contributing factor towards a student's chance of graduating college is whether or not they choose the right college.  College fit is becoming an important aspect of college exploration.  Student's must consider both "Head" and "Heart" Factors, as well as look at not only traditional Universities, but Trade Schools and other options as well.  See article, Why College Match Matters, and also see the YouTube video, Success in the New Economy

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

Learning Intentions:

  • Students will be able to understand how to:
  • Create an AdobeSpark Page
  • Come to learn basic facts in regards to their college of choice.

Success Criteria:

  • Students will research:
    • campus life
    • housing options
    • tuition costs
    • available majors
    • application deadlines.
  • Students will create an AdobeSpark page to demonstrate knowledge. To help with the familiarization of their campus of choice, they will include images in their Spark page that are openly licensed or cited.

Step 2 - Planning Instruction

Student Background Knowledge

  • Prior to this lesson, students will need to have an understanding of college readiness. It may also be important for them to have created a "Keys to Success" Account, and be familiar with the following websitehttp://www.utahmajors.org/exploratory_majors

Strategies for Diverse Learners

If a student isn't planning to go to a tradidional University, Students can choose to research a Technical College. Students may also choose how to research paying for college rather than a specific college. Research would include: Scholarships, First Generation Opportunities, FAFSA, etc.  Students can seek additional help from counselors.

Step 3 - Instruction

  • Show College and Career Exploraiton PPT to students. Emphasize importance of College and career exploration.
  • Instruct students how to create an Adobe Spark page. View Attached Using Adboe Spark Resources with students.
  • Talk with students about the importance of not publishing copyrighted photos to the web. Encourage students to use the "Find Free Photos" option within Adobe Spark, or using Search Creative Commons to find openly licensed images. If students use photos directly from college website, ask them to just share their Spark page with you instead of publishing to the web and to also cite their images.

Step 4 - Assessments

Students will create "College Exploration" Adobe Spark Page that includes 4 different areas of research. See attached Rubric and Adobe Spark Page Example
