Weather and Seasons

Weather and Seasons

Overview

This is a lesson plan for young preschoolers designed to help assess their knowledge of the four different seasons and the weather that goes with them.  Students will learn about the four seasons and the effect they have on the weather and world around them.  They will be able to show their knowledge through art.

Standard: 3–4 yr.1.1
Obtain and communicate information about local, observable weather conditions while exploring and describing patterns found in different seasons. Emphasize the observation and recognition of data. Examples of data may include sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, snowy, cold, or warm.

Standard 3–4 yr.1.2
Obtain and communicate information about human behavior patterns in different weather conditions. Emphasize the observation and recognition of data. Examples of data may include clothing, food, safety, and other preparations for expected weather.

Summary

Students will be able to name all four seasons and different characteristics and weather of each.

This lesson can take place in two sessions at 30 minutes each.

Background for Teachers

To teach this lesson, you will need an understanding of the different types of weather that occur in the four seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter)

You will also need to understand how this weather will affect outside plants, the way we dress, and the activities we can participate in outside.

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

Students will be able to understand the impact the different seasons and weather has on the world around them, and the acivities they can participate in outdoors during each season.

Students will use art to help describe the different weather and seasons and the affect it has on us and the world around us.

Adaptations: Working in groups would work to accomadate different learning needs

Step 2 - Planning Instruction

Prior to the lesson, students will need to have an understanding of the weather that occurs in each of the four seasons.

Step 3 - Instruction

Materials Needed:

4 trees worksheet (Created by Katie Fontaine  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Tree-Seasons-369153

Paint (white, pink, green, and orange)

Paper divided into 3 sections

Crayons or markers

Day 1: Watch the video Seasons For A Reason. https://youtu.be/rhbE1eDAkEw After the video talks briefly about each season, brainstorn with students some of the highlights from that season (including: weather of that season, different things we can do outside during that season, what changes happen to nature during that season, what kind of clothing we would wear during that season).  Do this for all 4 seasons.

If possible, bring in items or pictures from each season (fall leaves, rake, snow, sled, spring flowers, umbrella, swimming pool toy, sunglasses, etc.)  Have the students work as a whole class to categorize which season each item would belong to.

Day 2:  Students will finger paint four trees depicting the four seasons (Winter-White, Spring-Pink, Summer-Green, Fall-Orange)

Day 3: Divide students into 4 different groups for the 4 seasons.  Each student in each group will be given a paper divided into 3 sections.  On they paper they will draw 3  pictures.  One of the weather for that season, one of a different thing to do outside in that season and one showing the clothes that would be worn in that season. As a whole group we will look at all the pictures and categorize them into which season we think is being portrayed.

Extension: Students will listen to weather songs from "Super Simple Songs"

Extension: Teacher can bring in different items from the different seasons for different activities (example: bringing in leaves for fall for art and snow in the winter for a sensory table.)

Step 4 - Assessments

Students will be assessed on their knowledge sharing the picture they made depicting a season of the year.  As a class we will categorize them into the correct season (spring, summer, fall, or winter)
