    Abiotic/Biotic Lab: Mealworms

    Abiotic/Biotic Lab: Mealworms

    Overview

Students will brainstorm, design and create an environment they feel will be most productive for a mealworm to grow and change.

Students will define and understand the key terms:  Abiotic, Biotic, Independent Variable, Dependent Variable

Students will design an experiment using the Scientic Methods

    Summary

Students will design an experiment to determine the best environmnetal conditions to raise a mealworm.

Students will follow the Scientific Methods.

    Time Frame:  10 weeks

    Background Information

    • To teach this lesson, you will need an understanding of how to raise a meal worm and the stages of a meal worm.
    • Purchase mealworms in advance.  Amazon or pet store
    • Provide Oatmeal or wheat germ
    • Provide Potatos for moisture
    • Food options:  carrots, apples, or students choice
    • Keep your mealworms in a dark cubboard with potatos and oatmeal.

Abiotic/Biotic Lab Part A 🐛 Goals and Outcomes

Purchase mealworms in advance.  Amazon or pet store

    Provide Oatmeal or wheat germ

    Provide Potatos for moisture

Food options:  carrots, apples, or students choice

Keep your mealworms in a dark cubboard with potatos and oatmeal.

    • Learning Intentions:
      • Students will be able to design an experiment using the Scientific Process
      • Studnts will be able to define the terms Abiotic, Biotic, Independent, and Dependent Variables
    • Sucess Critera:
      • Design an expeirment using the Scientific Methods
      • Create a poster organizing each step of the Scientific Methods
      • Create an iMedia of the final presentation

    Step 1:

    Define:

Abiotic:(this is what you will be testing)

    Biotic:

Design possibilities: test: amount of light, kinds of music, temperature, amounts of food?

Research Mealworm: Mealworm Farm; Mealworm pets; Exotic Nutrition; How to raise a mealworm.

    What do they eat?

What living conditions are necessary for them to grow and mature?

What are the stages of a mealworm?

You will need to Take pictures, prepare a poster using a template, and make an i-movie presentation.

    Variables:

Dependent:  Growth of mealworm-life cycle changes of the worm

             Independent:  Whatever you are testing.

             Control:  food amount and moisture

    • Music:  if you use music it must be your own, I’m not responsible if you lose it, I don’t want to be able to hear it.

    • Worms will stay here in the lab and you will collect data weekly.

    Abiotic/Biotic Lab Part B 🐛 Data Collection

Allow student 10 weeks to gain data.  Encourage them to use a numerical unit as well as a visual.

Encourage the use of pictures or videos throughout their project to be used in their poster and iMovie.
