Much of the video material was videotaped on location throughout the state of Utah, giving the student and interested viewer valuable field trip experiences. === As viewed from the mountains east of the Salt Lake Valley, the seemingly beautiful cloud formations swirling about the mouth of the canyons are actually a classic example of a bad winter temperature inversion. When snow and moisture have fallen in the valley areas, followed by warmer weather, the colder air tends to be trapped by the relatively warmer air above. If no new fronts or storms arrive to scour out the cold air, then the pollutants generated by a populous area, in combination with the formation of heavy fog, result in a prolonged inversion. Visibility in the affected areas can be as little as half a city block, which was the case for this inversion during the early 1980s. From the canyons and ski resorts, the inversion appears as a "bowl of sloshing muck" in the areas below.--Paul Burrows, director of Geography of Utah [series]. ===
