    Background for Teachers

    Teachers need to be aware of the various ethnic/cultural groups that have had an influence on Utah's culture. 

    • To teach this lesson, you will need an understanding of the impact of the various ethnic/cultural groups which have had an impact on Utah's culture
    • You will need knowledge about key cultural groups (African Americans, Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Hispanics, Mexicans, ect.), understand thier basic culture, and know the following vocabulary terms: culture, food, music, religion, dress, and festivals.

    Student Prior Knowledge

    Prior to this lesson, students should be familiar with the key vocabulary words: culture, food, music, religion, dress, and festivals. Students should first apply them to their own life and identify the food, music, religion, dress, and festivals that are part of their own culture. 

    Student Learning Intentions & Success Criteria

    Learning Intentions:

    • After this lesson, students will be able to identify the food, music, religion, dress, and festivals that are a part of their own culture.
    • After this lesson, students will be able to identify various culture groups that have had an impact on Utah's culture. 
    • After this lesson, students will be able to identify the food, music, religion, dress, and festivals that are a part of a particular cultural group.
    • Success Criteria: Students will present a culture group that has had an impact on Utah's culture.  Students will identify the food, music, religion, dress, and festivals that are specific to that culture group.

     

     

     

    Instructional Procedures

    • Students will be introduced to the following vocabulary words: culture, food, music, religion, dress, and festivals. Students will write down the word and define each.  Students will draw a picture of the meaning of each vocabulary word.
    • Students will identify the food, music, religion, dress, and festivals that are a part of their own culture.  Students will first share in writing 3-5 paragraphs which will be turned in. 
    • The teacher will present an example presentation made in Adobe Spark on the Basque culture. Link: https://spark.adobe.com/video/MEsBWlCruJzMN
    • As a whole group, the teacher will lead students in together creating a presentation in Adobe Spark to represent one of the student's culture chosen. 
    • The teacher will lead the class in citing the digital sources of materials used to create the presentation in the ending credits in Adobe Spark. 
    • Individually, students will then make a presentation in Adobe Spark on their culture which includes: food, music, religion, dress, and festivals. Students can use pictures from the internet, magazines, newspaper, photographs taken to illustrate each item. 
    • Students will be intorduced to CultureGrams through the UEN Resource Library.  The teacher will lead the whole group in choosing one culture to research together, identify the items specific to their culture which include: food, music, religion, dress, and festivals. Together they will make a presentation in Adobe Spark. 
    • Students will work with a partner to identify one cultural group that has an impact on Utah's Culture.  Students will make a presentation in Adobe Spark to identify the food, music, religion, dress, and festivals that are specific to the chosen cultural group.

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

    Students who need accomodations can do the presentation with paper cutouts, glue, and scissors instead of doing it through multimedia. 

    Students who need accomodations can be placed with partners to form small groups of three. 

    Assessment Plan

    Students will be assessed on the following standards using a rubric:

    Utah Social Studies 4th Grade Standard II: Objective 1c.- Explore cultural influences from various groups found in Utah today and identify the food, music, religion, dress, and festivals associated with that group.

    English Language Arts Standard Speaking & Listening-CCSS ELA Literacy .SL.4.4-Students will report on a topic using appropriate facts, relevant details to support the main idea or theme.

    English Language Arts Standard Speaking & Listening-CCSS ELA Literacy .SL.4.4-Students will make presentation and speak clearly at an understandable pace.

    English Language Arts Standard Speaking & Listening-CCSS ELA Literacy .SL.4.5- Audio recordings were added to the presentation to enhance the theme.
