When snow and moisture have fallen in the valley areas, followed by warmer weather, the colder air tends to be trapped by the relatively warmer air above. If no new fronts or storms arrive to scour out the cold air, then the pollutants generated by a populous area, in combination with the formation of heavy fog, result in a prolonged inversion. Visibility in the affected areas can be as little as half a city block, which was the case for this inversion during the early 1980s.
