Description
Bring the Cloud to your Classroom! This two-day "Bring Your Own Device" workshop is designed to help educators effectively integrate Google Chromebooks and Cloud tools into a project-based educational framework. Participants gain experience using Chromebooks, evaluating online tools for educational use, and exploring strategies for teaching with this technology.
Pre-requisites
- Basic computer and internet skills
- Suggested to have completed the Google Educators course but not required.
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course participants should be able to:
- Understand how a Chromebook differs from a traditional computer or tablet.
- Identify and explore student tools for Communicating, Collaborating, Storing, and Sharing in the Cloud.
- Design classroom activities using a variety of Cloud tools for students.

Credit/Licensure Points: This course qualifies for 1 of the following. To qualify for credit, Southern Utah University requires that learners must complete 15 hours of contact time per credit hour in any given course.

- 1 Semester hour SUU credit

Day 1 (7.5 hours)
Topics: What is the Cloud?, Chromebook Basics, Setting up Your Chromebook, Storing in the Cloud, Creating in the Cloud
Activities:
- Classroom Discussion on Cloud Computing – explore the benefits of using the cloud as part of your classroom instruction.
- Chromebooks Basic PowerPoint – learn how to set up your Chromebook using a variety of applications and extensions (https://uen.instructure.com/courses/351102/pages/chromebooks-basics?module_item_id=2683841)
- Customize Chromebooks Application and Extensions – Using the Application Box expand your Chromebook by creating shortcuts for a variety of cloud tools.
- Discussion: Share one of the Chromebooks applications you installed and provide an idea for using the tool in your classroom.
- Explore implementing Cloud tools – 9 Ideas for Using the Cloud (https://uen.instructure.com/courses/351102/files/55619142?module_item_id=2680802)
- Storing in the Cloud – Explore the following tools: Dropbox, Google Drive, and FlickR
- Creating in the Cloud – Explore the following tools: Pixlr Editor, Kahoot!
- Assignment: Create an Educational Meme using Pixlr Editor. Share your image in Canvas.
Day 2 (7.5 hours)
Topics: Future of the Classroom, Sharing in the Cloud, Collaborating in the Cloud, Lightning Round, Final Lesson Plan
Activities:
- Classroom Discussion - Future of the Classroom: Using a video and discussion board in Canvas have students debate about the role of online vs on site instruction. Also, look at the role that Chromebooks will play in that classroom. (https://uen.instructure.com/courses/351102/discussion_topics/1192815?module_item_id=2681631)
- Sharing in the Cloud – Explore the following tools: Pinterest, Google Docs
- Communicating in the Cloud – Explore the following tools: Twitter, Google Hangouts
- Lightning Round - Provide students with the opportunity to explore the following tools: ThingLink, PearDeck, MoveNote, RealtimeBoard, Lucid Chart/Press, Edmodo.
- Classroom Discussion: Share one of the applications you explored and provide an idea for using the tool in your classroom.
- Explore apps and other resources
- Begin working on final lesson plan
Final Assignment (see rubric below)
Assignment Requirements:
- Either with a partner or by yourself, design an instructional plan that incorporates the use of one or more Cloud applications on your Chromebook. Take an existing part of your curriculum and develop a lesson plan/activity making effective use of the capabilities and features of a Chromebook.
- Write a one-page reflection paper on the role of Chromebooks in the classroom, including ideas for possible application in specific curriculum areas.
Getting Started:
The UEN Lesson Plan will be used to help guide you in creating a high quality lesson/activity
Using the UEN Lesson Plan tool, be sure to include at least the following components in your plan:
- Under the General Tab
- summary of the lesson with a clear explanation of how it connects to the content area being taught
- curriculum tie or direct correlation to the state core curriculum - you must have at least one curriculum tie
- Under the Instructional Tab
- materials necessary to complete the lesson (files, links to websites, etc.)
- intended learning outcomes See this website for differences between goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- instructional procedures What will you do? What will your students do?
- strategies for diverse learners include at least one modification or extension
- Under the Assessment Tab
- assessment plan How will you know if your students have learned what you want them to learn? What formative and summative assessments will you use? You may use the UEN Rubric Tool, but it is not required.
Make sure you click on the Preview Tab to get the URL. This is the URL you will submit for your assignment.
The Lesson Plan Tool does not allow formatting, but you can use HTML codes to make things look nice and organized.
