Resource Quality Evaluation Criteria:

What do I know about the organization producing the resource? (Credibility, For or Non profit?, past personal experiences or referrals)

Adherence to copyright law

suitability for grade level (curriculum connected, delivery & visual appeal)

Copyright date/relevence check

User friendly 1-10 rating scale, 10 being most user friendly

Am I getting this from a trusted provider?

I also really like the list from the Open Textbook Review Rubric, this also hits important points that I use when evaluating a source to use.

These are some of the things I look for when evaluating a resource:

  • Learning Intentions - clear objectives tied to core standards
  • Success Criteria - clear success criteria and plans to assessment mastery
  • Clarity - well written, complete, easy to follow
  • Content - meaningful, engaging, up to date
  • TPACK - Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge align well for the purpose of the lesson
  • Personalization - acommodations, scaffolds, extensions, student choice

I'm evaluating my own resource that I created using my evaluation criteria:

Organization:  4/5  I feel like the activity is laid out in a very organized way that is easy to read and understand.  However when I upload it, the formatting doesn't transfer the way I had it laid out in Google docs.  I uploaded a pdf version of the doc, but it's a bit tedious to have to download a resource and then it can not be edited.

Content Accuracy:  5/5  As far as I am aware, the content is all accurate and free of any mistakes.  However a fresh set of eyes might disagree. ;)

Clarity:  5/5  The instructions are clear and easy to understand

Ease of Use:  4/5  For me this activity is very easy to use.  It's part of my instructional routine.  However, like I said above (in organization) the fact that you have to download the pdf to properly view the document makes it a bit cumbersome.

Adaptability:  5/5  This lesson is easily adapted to all kinds of words.  You can do a making words activity with any word family, spelling patter, or completely unrelated words.  Just create a word list and then compile the letters that will be needed to make those words.  The instructional routine can be easily adapted.

Resource Quality Evalutaion Criteria (mathematics):

Tied to a standard and grade level

Accurate

Easy to understand 

Explains the why, not just the how

Even better if the source can explain how the concept is used in the real-world

I am a fan of the Open Textbook Network's criteria. I know it very well and believe it is well designed. I wrote a review of an OER textbook a few years ago using it (https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/textbooks/abstract-algebra-theory-and-applications).
