    Overview

    Students will use letters to make several short words. The words being constructed will be in word families and discussion should occur over chunks and letter patterns. At the culmination of the activity, all letters will be used to make one word.

    Instructional Procedures

    Invitation to Learn
    Bippity-boppity-bumble-bee. Write the letters s, t, n, i, r, s, i, l, e, a, h, p, o on the board. Ask, “I wonder how many words you could make using these letters?”

    Instructional Procedures

    1. Have students cut out the letters and start making words.
    2. When everyone has cut out the letters, give them two minutes to make as many words as they can on their own.
    3. Give an additional two minutes to make as many words as possible with a partner.
    4. Discuss the difference in the experiences. Did you make more alone or with a partner?
    5. Direct the students in making certain words. Talk about chunks, blends, letter patterns, etc.
    6. Gather sets of letters. Pass out a new set (one set per team). Have teams distribute the letters equally, then have teams make one word using all of the letters. The stipulation is that they may not talk to each other. If talking occurs, the person talking must sit out and withdraw his or her letters. Continue until the word relationships is spelled.
    7. Discuss the benefits of working together and that everyone has an important part to play in completing assignments. We need everybody. Allow students to place their letters to fill in the wholes that may have been created.

    Take the word cooperation home and see how many words can be made. Assemble a class graph on how many three-letter words, four letter words, etc.

    What words are made? How well does each student identify chunks, etc.
