In this class, students use data and systems knowledge to build models of complex socio-technical systems for improved system design and decision-making. Students will enhance their model-building skills, through review and extension of functions of random variables, Poisson processes, and Markov processes; move from applied probability to statistics via Chi-squared t and f tests, derived as functions of random variables; and review classical statistics, hypothesis tests, regression, correlation and causation, simple data mining techniques, and Bayesian vs. classical statistics. A class project is required.

Lesson introduces normal distribution and how it relates to standard deviation. It includes opportunities for students to notice key features of normal distribution graphs, reviews the concept of standard distribution and the empirical rule, and provides an interactive activity where they can practice adjusting normal distribution curves based on a different standard deviation or mean.

The history of Overland Trail migrants 1846-1852 is summarized in this media item extracted from the 20-part video series A PEOPLES' HISTORY OF UTAH, written and hosted by Dean L. May, PhD (University of Utah). The series provides a sweeping view of Utah's past, from its earliest known desert beginning--from its prehistory, to the pioneer era, to the transformation from territory to state, to its critical role in the world war years and beyond.

Quantitative analysis of uncertainty and risk for engineering applications. Fundamentals of probability, random processes, statistics, and decision analysis. Random variables and vectors, uncertainty propagation, conditional distributions, and second-moment analysis. Introduction to system reliability. Bayesian analysis and risk-based decision. Estimation of distribution parameters, hypothesis testing, and simple and multiple linear regressions. Poisson and Markov processes. Emphasis on application to engineering problems.

In this brief article from NRICH, the author describes the progression of probability from informal in early elementary grades to more formal experiences in upper elementary grades. Throughout the article the author suggests activities and problems presented on the NRICH website and linked through the article.

This course has been designed to help students focus learning on specific areas of improvement. Unlike a typical college course where you would complete lessons in chronological order, this course allows you to focus on specific skills. Modules include: Arithmetic Review, Percents, Geometric Figures, Measurement, and Statistics
